Description

A classic recipe featuring tender green beans in a creamy mushroom sauce topped with crispy fried onions, just like grandma used to make.

Ingredients

2 pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces

8 ounces mushrooms, sliced

1 medium yellow onion, finely diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

4 tablespoons butter

¼ cup all-purpose flour

1½ cups whole milk

½ cup chicken broth

1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

½ teaspoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon salt

½ teaspoon black pepper

2½ cups fried onions

¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F and butter a 2-quart casserole dish.

2. Blanch green beans in boiling water for 4 minutes, then transfer to ice bath.

3. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

4. Sauté onions and mushrooms until tender, about 6-7 minutes.

5. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.

6. Sprinkle flour over vegetables and stir constantly for 2 minutes.

7. Gradually whisk in milk and broth until smooth.

8. Add Worcestershire, soy sauce, salt, and pepper, simmer until thickened.

9. Fold in green beans and transfer to prepared dish.

10. Top with fried onions and bake for 25 minutes until bubbly.

Notes

For extra crunch, reserve some fried onions to add during the last 5 minutes of baking.

You can substitute frozen green beans if fresh aren’t available – just thaw and pat dry.

To make gluten-free, use gluten-free flour and ensure Worcestershire sauce is GF-certified.

Add crispy bacon bits or toasted almonds for extra flavor and texture.
